Day 4: Time is the only asset
When no one’s around to assign you tasks, how do you decide the most important thing you should work on?
Today, that question was top of mind. The day began with a productive start as I implemented the initial prototype of one of my projects. As the hours passed, though, I began questioning whether I was doing the most important thing I could be doing. The best founders know exactly what their biggest risk is and will keep chipping away at it until something else gains that top spot. For me, that priority is finding real problems that people are willing to pay for. I feel that I’ve jumped too soon into the implementation phase before doing the necessary steps of problem discovery and customer conversations.
There’s also the question of balance. Even if you do think you know the highest impact task, should you work on it 24/7? Probably not. You need to leave time for meals, breaks, exercise, and boredom. Inspiration tends to hit when you’re not actively seeking it because the downtime allows your brain to make the connections between disparate ideas. I’m trying to incorporate some time for that by going on regular strolls around the city (the photos at the top of these posts usually come from those).
Progress Updates
I spent most of the day finishing an MVP for my chord training app. I’ve even come up with some great use-cases for myself and other musicians:
Warm-up in the key of the song you’re about to perform
Use it as a tool for improvisation
Ear training (identifying chords simply by hearing them)
I’ll be spending some time tomorrow to test it out on myself. Here’s a demo of what it looks like in its current state:
As I mentioned yesterday, I’m looking for beta testers with Android devices, so if you’d like to help me test this (and get the app for free), email me at hi@jinay.dev.
