Day 23: Learning to commit
It’s such an uncomfortable feeling to not have a clear answer when someone asks, “what are you working on?” The answer will change day-by-day, as frequently as my projects change. Every time it happens, it highlights the biggest weakness I’m working to overcome—committing to my ideas.
This isn’t the first time I’ve recognized the issue in my work style. If you know me, you’ll know how often I switch between hobbies. If you catch me when I’m excited about something, you’ll see how deeply passionate I can get about it. The next week, though, that passion might have shifted to something completely unrelated.
In some ways, it can be beneficial to get good at switching projects. Most of the projects you see on my personal website are things I’ve built over a weekend. Every time I built one of those projects, I’ve ever-so-slightly improved my speed of iteration on new ideas, knowing that the motivation might not last for long. I’m also exposed to such a variety of new ideas that the breadth of my knowledge tends to far exceed its depth.
I believe commitment is a skill that one can improve, and this article I’m reading seems to agree.
